Almost a year later I come across your reply to a query to my search for George Moonlight. Am now well and truly into writing an account of George and his cousin Tom who joined him on the Australian gold fields. Tom also settled in New Zealand and tried his hand on the South Island goldfields but ended up in the Waihola district. Later moved north when his cousin went missing. With boxes of material, some I collected in California, have begun writing the Life and Times of George 'Fairweather' Moonlight; "Fairweather" being a name he used on occasions when he wished to shake off those that followed the movements for he was a well known prospector who was said to have an uncanny knack for finding gold. But I am also aware that the name is used in a Scots saying, "Fairweather cometh from the North." And am wondering if that had something to do with the Royalists. One other thing that I waver on is his familyin Arbroath. I am aware he had one, but he once told some youngsters, "You boys are lucky. I never had a home." George married Elizabeth Gaukroger in Nelson, NZ. in 1865 and they had two children. Elizabeth (Tottie) and John who was named after George's best friend, JohnTarrant. Oh, and he named a mountan south of Murchison, (Nelson) province, "Magdalene", after his grandmother, I presume. Thank you for your reply that I somehow missed. Jenny Vidgen.
