Thanks for replying Andy. Apologies for not returning to this tab earlier. Have been emersed in material relating to George who travelled the world. Now, having sorted all the where and whens, I am writing "The Life and Times of George "Fairweather" Moonlight".(The name "Fairweather" both Tom and George used when taking out claims at Tuapeka, Otago, when this gold field attracted thousands in 1861. The name "Fairweather" was used by both when taking out a claim in Otago as George by then had become known as a successful prospectorin Victoria and California. I believe it comes from a passage in the bible; "Fairweather cometh from the north". Tom, who remained single, was a scholarly fellow well liked by all who knew him. Later he became an orchardist in Nelson. As for George, the memorial erected over his grave says it all. From the opening chapter of my unfinshed manuscript- "Here in the highest part of the cemetery, beneath a tall and slender black granite monument, lies George "Fairweather" Moonlight and his wife Elizabeth. On the pedestal is written- 'This monument was erected by the friends of the deceased in testmony of the unwearying energy, perseverence and self sacrifice exhibited during a good part of their lives in developing the gold mining industry in this Province, and in the pursuit of which George Moonlight died'. The couple had two children; Elizabeth, known as Tottie, and John, who was named after George's best friend, Jack Tarran, a surveyor.
