I wish I could helpand the 18 you more with Dr. Pelot. I frist encountered him in the series of letters which were published in the Abbeville newspaper during 1856, and all I knew was his initials. I knew that his surname was not an Abbeville surname. By happenstance I have run into the family name in Charleston, and I recently located his name as as graduate of the South Carolina Medical College. Although one or two of his letters appeared in the Charelston papers, the great bulk were published in the Abbeville paper, which leads me to speculate that he may have gone to Abbeville District to practice medicine before he left for Kansas. The Abbeville Court House burned in the 1870's, so that the records of the Clerk of Court which might give some clues to his presence in Abbeville are missing.

If you are interested further in him, I suggest you contact the South Carolina Historical Society in Charleston. If I run across anything more on Dr. Pelot, I will certainly post it. I have a stack of 15 or so articles still to process and post, but none appear to mention his name.

Do you know where he was living per the Census of 1870? And do you know the maiden name of Eleanor? Given her 1848 date of birth, and the 1869 birth of J. M. P.'s son (I assume she was his first wife), it would indicate they were probably married in 1868 or earlier.
