I would be almost certain that he was the same man. I frankly do not know much about him, and did not become acquainted with his name until I discovered the series of newspaper articles which appeared primarily in the Abbeville [S.C.] Press. He apparently was originally from Charleston, and he graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1855. The name appears to be a French Huguenot name; there was a very substantial French Huguenot presence in South Carolina that dated from the early 1680's. I have been advised that he is a portrayed as a moderate character in a play on the Kansas troubles staged by a dedicated group of re-enactors headquartered out of Lecompton; and also that he did settle in Missour postwar. I was not aware that he was one of the co-founders of the Kansas Medical Scoiety. From the language of his letters, he was well-educated, probably with a classical education.

Certainly he represented a Southern viewpoint in the struggle for Kansas, but his views do appear to be moderate, as much as one could be in those days. I see that he was initially in the 5 S.C., which was raised in April 1861, and mustered into Confederate service for one year. When the Army was reorganized in April 1862, a new 5 S.C. was raised, which was principally recruited from the remnants of the old 5 S.C. Most of its men came from Chester, Fairfield, and York Districts (now counties), but by then he was an assistant surgeon. I do not know his assignments to duty as a surgeon.

Do you know if the children or grandchildren of the children you knew still live in the same area of Missouri?
