Re: Co. G, 41 Illinois Infantry

Marsha,

I have done a lot of research on the 41st Illinois and Co G. I live in Taylorville. Captain Long's family owned a hotel called the "Long House". Abraham Lincoln is said to have been a frequent guest at the hotel when he was in town while on court business as a circuit rider. Francis M. Long was the Captain and enlisted the men of Co G. He worked at the hotel at the time and was in a good position to enroll the men. His father Thomas was a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Blackhawk War--rank of Major. Capt. Frank Long was promoted to Major by the time of the July 12 Jackson MS debacle. Our sources show that Major Long was captured on July 12th, had his leg amputated in a rebel hospital in Jackson and that his body was recovered by the Federal forces when Jackson was evacuated by Confederate Gen. Joe Johnston a few days later. There is a grave and monument to Major Long in Taylorville's Oak Hill Cemetery. The Taylorville GAR Post 392 was named for Francis M. Long. One source says that his body was brought back to Taylorville in 1868. This may not be true--our investigation continues. The men of Co G appear to be mostly Taylorville and Christian County fellows--not particularly of Scottish origin. I also have the regimental history of the Illinois 115th infantry (written by IHC Royse). I'll be happy to copy and send you relevant papers about all this.
The Illinois 41st saw heavy fighting in the battles of Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg and Jackson. At Shiloh they were engaged at the Peach Orchard, Sunken Road, Hornets Nest & Bloody Pond areas. They were fighting near the area where Con. Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston was killed. His death has been generally attributed to have been from his own troops(n/k/a "friendly fire"). It's entirely possible the shot came from the ILL 41st! Best regards, Tom Doyle
