Re: Co. G, 41 Illinois Infantry

Michael,
Have searched all of the Illinois locations--no luck for burials. Of all the pictures posted, no hat like his--I'm sure it means something-just don't know what. Maybe Corporals had them and there are no other surviving pictures of corporals (that we know of) who volunteered in Captain Long's Company--I think E. J. Sherrill must have gone in at the first request from President Lincoln. Possibly the first volunteers under Captain Long were outfitted with uniforms and guns.

You confirmed what I thought. I've always believed my Sherrill ancestors were Englsih--I'm an amateur genealogist with Illinois paternal roots in Cass, Sangamon, Christian, Macoupin, and Montgomery Counties. Previous to that, Sherrills in North Carolina and so forth.

I know for sure where he died--it's on his muster sheet for July and August 1863--killed July 12, 1863--Jackson, Mississippi. In the history of the 41st it's clear what happened on that specific day. Many men were slaughtered because of a bad order. (I wonder if there are more specific records in DC or somewhere else.)

The picture is in a velvet covered case--under glass--ambrotype. We believe (no documention)the pic.was taken when he first joined--Captain Long's Volunteers signed up in Decatur, Illinois (joined for duty July 26, 1861.) He's young and does not look fatigued or undernourished. Before my dad passed, he did carefully have the pic copied. I'm sure I can find the picture.I'm blessed with two Civil War pictures. From other information, I know E.J.'s picture along with his brother's, Francis M.Sherrill of the 115th Illinois--he was a wagoneer (also died) were given to my great grandmother, Fanny Elizabeth (Sherrill) Baney after they died. (Her name was misspelled as Bainey--happened all of the time.)

If you're a member of an Illinois Round Table, do you think you could find out anything out about Capt. Long's Co., Christian County Guards, Illinois? Maybe somebody who survived kept a diary of that specific day and it's been preserved somewhere.

Thanks,
Marsha
