Gale, Just discovered your post on Hart's Island prison in New York. ( about a year-old ) My paternal 2 x great-grandfather was also a prisoner there. Private David Land Co. I 13th NC. Infantry. He was captured " on the south side railroad " Petersburg 4/2/1865. Held till June 19-20 1865. He was a conscript from Wilkes County. I would imagine that was quite a culture shock for someone from the western North Carolina mountains !
