Thanks George,
I will indeed try to make it up there one of these days.

One thing that sort of makes me sad and something that I wonder about: In the book, "Last Flag Down", which as I said quoted extensivly from Lt. Whittle's log, all through his voyage aboard the CSS Shenendoah he constantly remarks in his log about his love and worry for his dear Pattie, his true love, asking God to watch over her and his family, etc..

After the surrender of the Shennendoah at Liverpool, England he and some of his fellow officers lived in Argentina for some years in an ex-Confederate enclave there. The book said that he hated Yankees with a deep and passionate hatred, for what they did to our rights fought for during the Revolution, and lands of his people, southerners in general, and his dear Southland. It said he farmed there in Argentina for a few years until he had farmed his bitterness and hatred away.

It said he finally went to back to the U.S. to Norfolk, etc, his jobs, etc.. It said he never, ever saw or heard from his dear Pattie again, and never menioned her any more for the rest of his life, finally marrying the one he did marry in Norfolk. I am just ate up with curiosity as to what happened to that Pattie whom he loved so deeply and prayed for on a daily basis? More than likely she had given him up for dead and married another. But the book does not say. Perhaps she died during those horrid years. I wish I knew. I ended up that book, as I read all that, and about his tears as he surrendered their ship, watched the flag lowered and furled for hte last time, etc, with tears of my own. Not only for what he went through and his emotions at losing the war (for I am a devout Southron also and I can understand how he must have felt), but for his love and his feelings pertaining to his dear Pattie. I thoroughly recommend the book "Last Flag Down" to any student of the Civil War Naval aspect of the war or anyone just curious about our (the South's) navy.
Take care,
