my pleasure. I have a strong feeling that Maury's proposals for gunboats were also heavily influenced by the British experience in the Crimea and Black Sea. The British boats had a major stability problem. They were very light draft and very heavily armed. Their bulkheads were short and fully loaded with their sail rigs they had a fairly high c of g. During transit, they were often towed to the operational area because of small coal bunkerage. On one of the classes, the largest gun (a 68 lb rifle) was removed and carried on the towing ship during transit. At least two classes had the caliber of one of their two guns reduced. With both large pieces it was dicey firing at a target on a parallel course in any kind of seaway. I think Maury's boats should have theoretically done a bit better. They were not quite as heavily armed, had bluffer bows and better distribution of buoyancy. They also had about 2 foot more draft. They were designed to use industrial type steam engines similar to those used in mills. The clinker was the driveline and propellers. I believe at least one of the Maury types was intended for an auxiliary sail rig. The rest were straight short range steamers. Their fuel consumption would have been high.
