Yes, he had sawmills, cotton gins, blacksmith shops, etc. There were a number of lumber mills in that area (still are). Jackson County, just below Saffold, was one of Florida's three most populous counties at that time and had a population of over 10,000 (a lot for Florida in those days). The Chattahoochee Valley was a pretty good center for small Southern industry at the outbreak of the war.
