I've located some of Johnston's papers and hope to have copies today. They are among the papers of the Saffold family (his inlaws) in Early County.

I spent some time walking over the navy yard site at Saffold and found it interesting. Johnston's home was on a large hill about a mile away and it was possible for him to look out his front door and literally see the work underway. The actual site is now fenced and on private property and there are no standing buildings. Much of the river face has eroded away. The owners, fortunately, are very aware of its significance and are preserving the land "as is."

There is what appears to be a large cut or slip leading into the Chattahoochee river. It is angled in such a way that a boat could be launched out into the stream without striking the opposite bank. Although heavily overgrown, it is obviously manmade because it is rectangular.
