John M. Brooke, Confederate ordnance engineer, enters an idea for a mortar in his journal entry of December 14th of 1861.:
" I suggested today to the Sectry to construct a mortar of 24 inch caliber, on Longridge's plan with some arrangements of my own. He directed me to prepare my plan etc. and he would lay it before the president."
