Mention by Captain Craven of the U.S.S. Brooklyn in his report of action against Forts Jackson and St. Philip. After the forts were captured Craven made a reconaissance of the work and reported, Series I, Volume 18, page 773,
"There are 176 guns in all of these defences, besides a very efficient mortar battery, which does not appear to have been used. This is very strange, inasmuch as they might have done incredible injury to our fleet."
