Gov. C.F. Jackson of Missouri requested artillery in the form of "a few large guns and Mortars" from the newly formed Confederate States in a letter given to President Jefferson Davis by a military commission sent from Missouri.
The letter is dated April 17, 1861 and expressed fears that the "abolitionist" control of the St. Louis Arsenal "will be greatly in our way in the event of active hostilities being commenced". Jackson's view was to use a few large guns to "batter down its walls".
No ordnance was sent in support of Missouri, it simply did not exist.
Watching the events from his office window influenced the supervisor of the St. Louis Streetcar Co. to resign his position and regain his former U.S. Army military commission. His name was William Techumseh Sherman.
