I just found this thread, not sure if we have ever correponded....Do you have that log book from Rattler? I am the Great-Great-Great Grandson of Acting Assistant Engineer Albert Martin Clinton Smith (1834-67) who served on the Rattler and later the USS Little Rebel, I have a log book kept on both ships. Albert was at the church when the incident happened, wrote a loing letter home with the account, he jumped out a window, lost his hat etc the next day when all calmed down a lady who was there returned hat to the then docked ship!
