Johnny Reb,

I just was watching a History Channel program on "Camp Douglas, 80 Acres of Hell" (within present day Chicago), and they talked about how so many of the incarcerated Confederates suffered from scurvy and what the symptoms were. In regards to my great-great grandfather (GGF) Andrew Jackson Masters, the only scepticism I was expressing was over his claim that scurvy had affected his eyes. Maybe it did but I think I used the word "allegedly" (sp?) because I didn't see bad eyes on the list of scurvy symptoms.

Neither am I saying GGF was lying. He was only a cook with rank of private and a farmer otherwise. GGF was probably told that's what caused his bad eyes and that's what he put on his disability application. There were a heck of a lot of eye diseases floating around, especially in the prison camps (he was at Camp Ford in Texas).

Would anyone know what the uniform for a common enlisted man was in the Ohio 77th? The picture I have of GGF has him shown from the chest up in a dark (blue? black?), high collared jacket of some kind, light colored (shiny?) buttons, and a dark, brimmed hat without any emblems. The photo is a bit fuzzy and was obviously re-touched by the original photographer. The outfit looks military to me but there are absolutely no insignia. I've looked in some reference books but haven't found the 77th Ohio's uniform yet. I'd appreciation any help.

Thanks for the reply!

Doug Campbell
