Thanks for the great info! I haven't been actively following this thread and was pleasantly surprised to find there was quite a lot of posting activity on the 77th Ohio Volunteers.

As far as my great-great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Masters, is concerned, I agree it probably wasn't scurvy as we know it that (alledgedly) damaged his eyesight. A year as a prisoner at Camp Ford could have exposed him to many different diseases that might have affected his eyes.

For the reference of anyone who might seek more information about my ancestor, AJM, he is buried in Brearly Cemetary in Dardanelle, Arkansas and his grave has a second, modern tombstone acknowledging his Civil War service and unit. I have a photo of him in what I believe is his uniform.

If you get the information on your ancestor scanned and digitized, I would love to read it for the information it contains on the conditions within the 77th. I have yet to visit Marks Mill but will try to do so on my next visit to Arkansas.
