This might not be exactly what you are looking for in regard to that particular incident but I have some info on the Ohio 77th in Arkansas from my ancestror's civil war records, which are quite extensive... about 300 pages in his file. In October, 1862, he joined the Ohio 77th Volunteer Infantry, Company I under Capt William T Robinson. Companies A & I traveled together.

According to the depositions of several soldiers and officers from those two companies, they were returning from the Red River campaign and marched into Arkansas in July-Aug of 1863. My ancestor had been detached for 2 months to be a nurse at the hospital in DuValle Bluff, AR. He then returned to his unit. Companies A & I embarked on a hard march from Helena, AR to Little Rock in Aug 1863 (a distance of 121 miles.) Many soldiers became ill with lung and eye infections and varicose veins brought on by the hard march and subsequent hard winter while guarding a Railroad depot in Little Rock from Nov 63 to May 64.
At that point, my ancestor had eye infections so severe that he had to be sent to an eye and ear hospital in Chicago from where he was discharged on disability as a result of the blindness incurred from the chronic eye infection.

But companies A & I were mustered from Brownsville, TX on March 8, 1866... a distance of 1700 miles from their homes in Ohio.
