Re: Colonel Emerson Opdycke - 125th OVI

Hello

I had 3 ancestors in the 118th OVI and am particularly interested in Franklin. It seems to me that the problem with Opdykes claims and for that matter Cox's and Stanleys were that 23rd corp units also charged forward from reserve at the same time as Opdyke. They would not have been under Opdykes command. It seems to me likely that all three may be right.Cox and stanly may have issued the orders opdyke and the other reserves may have acted on their own as well in the confuion of that charge seconds counted. Maybe we should also give credit to the fighting enlisted man in those units.. There were many veterans there who would have known help was needed desperatly maybe its a case of everybody acting simultaneously.Cox and stanley may have issued orders that Opdyke was already acting upon.
