In the Roll of Officers and Enlisted Men of the Third, Fourth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Kansas Volunteers, starting on page 50 are the rosters of Company K - Cavalry Company, Third Regiment, Kansas Volunteers. It says:

This company was known as "Vansickle's Company of Independent Scouts," and was irregularly organized. When (the) Third Kansas Regiment was merged in other organizations it was assigned to (the) Sixth Kansas Volunteer Cavalry as Company I, but during July or August, 1862, was mustered out, and is not accounted for in the rolls of the Sixth Kansas Cavalry - Company I of that organization having been organized in the spring of 1863, and is not identified with this company.

The officers were:

John H. Vansickle, Capt.
Charles W. Ford, First Lt.
Wilson W. Wright, Second Lt.

A complete roster shows 2 first sergeants, 4 sergeants, 8 corporals and 83 privates over the term of its existence. Of interest were:

Private Jasper Wright, killed in action at Butler, Missouri on December 14, 1862.

Most of the men joined at either Fort Lincoln, Kansas (12 miles north of Fort Scott) or Mound City. Private Andrew Stanbrook joined at Osceola, Missouri on October 22, 1861.

Lane's Brigade contained several Home Guard units as the primary directive was to defend the Kansas border against the Missouri State Guard. Among them were Vansickle's, Bain's, and Dudley's scouts. Jennison's cavalry served with Lane's Brigade for such a short time, I do not include them in my review. Jennison preferred to act independently and spent most of 1861 apart from Lane's Brigade.
