Fred Campbell and Don Miller wrote "Historic Reflections of Bourbon County" which was just released last year. Pages 24-25 give an account of this case with more details than you have posted here. They list the date as June 1863. According to it John Van Sickle joined the Third Kansas Vol CAV(Jennison's Regt.) and later transferred to the 6th KS.
