Re: Union Transports at Island No. 10

Terry,

The web site of the US Army Transportation Museum at Ft Eustis shows an old H.H. Lovie engraving from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper of one of the Island No. 10 transports, the former CSS W. B. Terry. The Terry was seized by the gunboat USS Lexington at Paducah, KY, on 22 Aug 1861, along with another vessel. The WBT, valued full up at $3000 dollars, was pressed into service in support of the Western Gunboat Flotilla. There is a report in the OR from Gen John C Fremont that details the details. Later, the Terry ran aground while transporting a load of coal and was captured by Confederate cavalry and burned. If you do a Google search on the WB Terry you can find out the involvement of the Lexington, the Confederate units and other details. Sorry, don't have that stuff in front of me, am relying on memory.
