Thanks for your reply. While in Crested Butte, CO this summer I came across a page from what appears to be Harper's Weekly or one of those magazines--it was a tabloid size page. It was a colorized pen and ink rendering of the cutting through the swamp. It was mounted on a stiff backing, but I could barely make out through the illustration on the back side of the page a narrative of the siege. Do you know of any archives that have copies of these old magazines? Stories in the magazines of the time probably had a fair amount of detail on such events.
