Can anyone shed further light on the Naval Works Battalion at Columbus, Georgia, please? I have collected data on several other personnel who served in the Battalion, including Philip Eifler, Freeman C. Stewart, Alonzo Turner and David N. Peddy, all of whom collected Confederate pensions from the state of Georgia. Although the biography of W.R.K. Stanford states that he was in the Confederate States Navy, I am almost certain that the Naval Works Battalion was actually a militia unit in the service of the state government, and not the Confederate States Navy. They still performed sterling service, from all accounts, and were surely entitled to the Confederate pension, but I feel that they were not CSN sailors, in the sense of the word. Until further additional data can be collected to confirm their exact service, I will still include their names and details at my CSN Personnel web sites.
