Went back to the Official Records of the War of the rebellion and in an addendum Co. F, 5th Mich. Cavalry Rgt. is listed as fighting at Frying Pan, Va.

Also checked Fredrick Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion and got good/bad news results.

Good NEWS--Dyer lists Union losses at Frying Pan as three killed, seven wounded and seven missing (some of those missing could have become prisoners of war).

Bad NEWS--Dyer lists the unit involved as 5th NY Cavalry Rgt.

In the chronological history of 5th Mich. and 5th NY Cavalry Rgts. Dyer lists Frying Pan under 5th Mich and no such listing under 5th NY Cavalry. Since Col. Gray, a Mich. cavalry brigade officer, commanded during the action, I think Dyer is in error when he credits 5th NY Cavalry in his list of battles & Union units involved.

BrigGen. J. Stahel's report of the skirmish is the only one in the O. R. and the fact that his report is apparently wrong on casualties is no surprise.

Whatever dates and events exist in Robert's service file should be considered THE answer as he is more apt to remember what, when and where something happened to him then anyone else.

The 1890 US Veterans Census (sparate from nation-wide census) is my source of Robert's wound. No specifics as to date or geographic place.
