Alan: Thanks. I have a typed copy of a postwar letter written by the officer to Capt. J Allen Bigelow. But the letter doesn't have the man's name or the date. It describes the 5th's activities from July 4-5 at Monterey Gap, Pa.(he says he's riding one of Ferry's mares) to July 24 when they're back in Va. I should have mentioned that he later left the 5th to become Lt. Col of the 10th Mich Cav.
