When Custer arrived at Ft. Cobb which was about 50 miles North of present day Ft. Sill, he found the Commanding officer an old nemisis of his. I forget the mans name but it was over some slight during the War. This officer was not making the Indians stay in the immediate vicinity of Ft. Cobb, thinking that as long as they were in Indian Territory they were where they were susposed to be. But Custer being who he was, thought that they needed to be around the agencies so as to be controlled, kind of like a prison situation.

I forget if he went South and established Ft Sill first or attacked Black Kettle first but he established Ft. Sill because he didn't trust that commander and caused the man to lose his job and have Ft. Cobb shut down. That way the Indians had to report to Ft Sill and remain closer to their preferred areas of the Wichita Mts.

Note of Interest: Quartz Mountain State Lodge is sitting on the site of Custer's, Bugler's grave. The young man had climbed up the Mountain there and fell, breaking his neck. The State of Oklahoma moved the Grave to Ft. Sill prior to building the Lodge.

The town of Ft Cobb remains today and a person can find buttons and artifacts at the old Fort Site.
