Ken,
Was this Fort Nickols,build by Col"Kit" Carson (N.M.) in Ok on the Cimarron cutoff (near Boise)1865 with 300 men as a halfway desert station for the protection of Caravans & Stages from predatory Indian's and outlaw's.??

It was surrounded by rock walls and deep ditches-"moats"
the houses were 1/2 -dugouts 4ft underground and 4ft above ground rockwalls--mounted Howitzers were placed along the walls.
He made Union Gen.1865 after building this site,had been Indian Agent 1853-to Civil war,and was at the Peace Treaty
of Medicine Lodge Kansas of 1867 of 34 tribes along with "Black Beaver" Deleware(8) --"Jesse Chislom"(18)he Carson spoke 8 Indian langage's all as Inturpter's.
He forced the Apaches,and others to I.T. He died in 1868 at Ft Lyons Colorado, he had been Fort commander of Ft Bent Colo. his Cvil War recordis of New Mexico he commanded
Indian units -into forcing Navajo into Reservations.
