Neil.... As far as I can tell, I should be able to help you. I am in the same situation. My great-grandfather, George T. Tracy was a member of the 10th Kansas Infantry and the 3rd Kansas Volunteers (Lane's Brigade). He joined in July 1861 (Lane's Brigade), transitioned to the 10th Kansas and veteranized with his unit, the 10th Kansas Veteran Volunteers, mustering out in August/September 1865.

The mystery of whether or not the 10th Kansas was present at Franklin, Tennessee, has not been solved yet. Records show that they were attached to Major General David Stanley's 4th Army Corps and transported from St. Louis to Paducah, Kentucky, then rushed by train to Nashville. Elements of the 10th Kansas were shifted toward's Franklin during the battle, but, as you indicated, there are no records of their participation. Yet Franklin is designated as one of their engagements. So far I have not found proof one way or the other. Even if they were present, the 10th would have been only on the fringes, as no casualties were reported.

A similar mystery has been solved as the 10th Kansas was allowed to put the battle of Pilot Knob, Missouri on their battle flag but the regiment was not present with General Ewing's 1,000 men. That is, until I found documentation that Major Henry H. Williams and Captain Charles S. Hills were both attached to General Ewing's staff and played prominent parts during the battle of Pilot Knob. Their distinction was added to the 10th's battle honors.

I will look up James Darley Newcomb to see what I have on your ancestor. Must have been quite a fellow to have been wounded in two of the 10th's more distinguished actions.
