Neil..... Whit Edwards at the Oklahoma Historical Society is a great reference. There are several things you are going to want to do, if you haven't already. You will want to order his military and pension records from the National Archives (NARA.gov). While they will cost you $17 and $34 respectively it is still less expensive than going to Washington, D.C. There is also a book (I am typing from memory and can't recall all the details) by ______ (Charles?) Groene, with a title like "How to Research Your Civil War Ancestor" or something like that. Should be in the bookstores and is in paperback by now. The information in there is very useful on research, although the internet has made much of it easier today.

And of course, I will help you any way I can. The other treasure trove, of course, would be any information that came down in your family. Since your great-grandfather was in a GAR post, he may have left letters, a diary, references in documents, contributed to the local newspaper (many GAR members submitted articles to the New York Tribune in the 1890's about their experiences), etc.

Just let me know how I can help.

Thanks,
Howard Mann
