Neil.... Here is what I found:

James D. Newcomb joined Company G. 3rd Kansas Volunteers, Lane's Kansas Brigade at Osawatomie, Kansas on July 29, 1861. The company was commanded by Captain Eli Snyder, 1st Lieutenant John Downing and 2nd Lieutenant Fred A. Smalley. In April 1862, Newcomb's company was consolidated to Co. D, 10th Kansas Infantry. Captain Snyder was replaced by Captain Charles S. Hills. The regiment was veteranized on August 14, 1864 and Private Newcomb's company was transferred to New Company B. They mustered out at Montgomery, Alabama on August 30, 1865.

Lt. Colonel Charles S. Hills reported a summary of the 10th Kansas Veteran Regiment to the Adjutant General of Kansas on July 10, 1865. In his report he stated:

"Re=embarked on transport and proceeded up Cumberland river arriving at Nashville, Tenn. Nov 27th. Transferred to cars and proceeded to Columbia, Tenn. which place was reached Nov. 28th and was temporarily assigned to 4th Army Corps. Nov. 28th & 29th retreated before Hoods forces to Spring Hill a distance of 11 miles. Nov. 30th continued retreat to Franklin, Tenn. and engaged in the battle at that place."

No other specific information has been located.

Your great-grandfather and mine were in all of the same organizations at almost the same time. Very interesting.

Thanks,
Howard Mann
