Susan..... Officers were allowed to "resign" their commissions at anytime with Department Commanding General approval and I have seen many instances where officers at the company or staff level submitted their request for resignation and recieved approvals which would subsequently be replied to in the form of a Special Order.

Some examples would be one infantry officer who resigned because he was promised that his company would be mounted and he could not keep up the pace with walking; another officer resigned because his colonel was not pro-abolitionist; another officer claimed he did not recieve a promotion given to another officer, etc.

Enlisted men did not have the same luxury.

I will continue to look as well.
