Chris.... You are correct about Lt. John Bowles, Company I, 3rd Kansas under the "Fighting Preacher" Captain John E. Stewart. An interesting note on this company is:

"Until January 1, 1862, this company was designated "Company K" Third Kansas Volunteers; after that date it became Company I. This comapny was organized as a cavalry company, during July, August and September, 1861. Whe the infantry companies of the Third and Fourth Kansas Volunteers were consolidated into the Tenth Infantry, this company, being cavalry, was assigned to the Ninth Kansas Cavalry as Company C."

A bugler, Pvt. Charles Gordon, and Private William Henry was killed in action at Drywood, Sept. 2, 1861.

Private Peter Wylan was killed at Maple Creek, Missouri on October 25, 1861.

Private Jerimiah Allen died of disease at Fort Scott on December 15, 1861. Private Thomas G. Rote died of disease at Osawatomie, Kansas on December 10, 1861. Private William Yeager died of disease at Mound City, Kansas on January 1, 1862.

The company consisted of 3 officers and 90 enlisted men.

Stewart's noted abolitionism probably fit philosophically with Bowles. Does anyone have Bowles' military records?

Thanks,
Howard Mann
