The Kansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Lt. Col. John Bowles
In Response To: Lt. Col. John Bowles ()

Hello, Everyone.

My last message, posted in 2004, mentioned that I was working on a biography of one of Lt. Col. John Bowles' descendants, a filmmaker named Dudley Murphy.

The book was published last fall by the University of Minnesota Press as "Dudley Murphy, Hollywood Wild Card." It has gotten some nice reviews, particularly in academic and library circles.

Unfortunately for those interested in the war in Kansas, Lt. Col. Bowles makes only a flitting appearance on one page. But what is said about him is as accurate as I could make it, in part due to individuals on this message board. Many thanks to Howard Mann and Chris Tabor.

For anyone with an interest in Lt. Col. Bowles's life after the war, I was fortunate enough to establish a connection with his great-grandson a couple of years before he died. He passed along to me some of Bowles's papers from late in his life, which I photocopied.

If anyone is interested, I would be pleased to share them.

Best regards,
Susan Delson
