UGRR
In Response To: Re: Lt. Col. John Bowles ()

Is anyone familiar with the UGRR through Indian Territory into Kansas? I have read that the UGRR followed a road up the eastern edge of the Osage Hills in IT from west of Tulsa north through James McDaniel's near Sperry OK, through Gap Road (south and west of Circle Mtn a couple of miles south of Bartlesville) to Jesse Thompson's, and up the Caney River into Kansas.

McDaniel was captain of the Reserve Company in Drew's Regiment who defected to the camp of Opothleyahola and the Loyal Creeks before the battle of Chustenalah in Dec 1861.

This route along the eastern boundary of what is now Osage County was likely Opothleyahola's planned route to KS. Presumably, McDaniel and his friends were the Cherokee who encouraged Opothleyahola to take this route where he would find friends. Some number of Cherokee had also moved to this area to join Opothleyahola.

Is anyone familiar with KS records connected to these Cherokees or the Loyal Creeks or the UGRR in this area?

Ken
