If you want a version of the border war where the people started the war as unionists but turned secessionist after its 15-year old son's was strung up repeatedly by northern partisans, read the book "Plain Speaking the Oral Biography of Harry Truman" by a gentleman whose last name is Merle. (Lordy, I hate being away from my library.)
As a child Truman's mother, suffered the results of Order Number 11 and hence refused to stay in the Lincoln bedroom when she visited Harry in the Whitehouse. When Truman's clothing business failed after WWI, he sold AAA auto memberships in the Kansas City area and would make it a point to hit as many of the GAR reunions in Kansas as possible. As I recall the text, Truman's relatives would always remind him to keep a look out for the family's good china and silver plate since it was last seen heading to Kansas back in late 1864.
I have helped the Truman Library put on Buffalo Soldier presentations to commemorate his desegregation of the Army during his first term.
Anyway it is a neat book and fun to read. VR, Maj. Scott Price, USAR (Retired)
