Bruce, thank you for writing about my great grandfather, Isaac Newton Adams. I have received Isaac’s military records, including the Record of Death and Interment, which contain some notations that may be of interest to you. Our information agrees that Isaac was wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro, resulting in amputation of his leg. However, according to Pages 1 and 2 of the Record of Death and Internment, Isaac was “Brot dead from hospital train.” This comment appears clearly on both pages, with Page 2 signed by John H. Phillips, the surgeon in charge of the U. S. General Hospital, Chattanooga, TN. Apparently, the amputation occurred at a field hospital, perhaps to keep him from bleeding to death. Further credence is found in “Remarks” in the “Company Muster Roll for Sept & Oct 1864,” where this notation is entered, “Wounded and sent to hospital Sept. 1. 64.” Again in “Remarks” in “Company Muster Roll for Nov & Dec 1864,” this notation is made, “Died in Hospt. train Nov. 4. 64. from wounds recd. in action.” I also have a copy of the discharge for Isaac, “Discharged by reason of death,” signed by Lt. Hunt. I am amazed how much of the past I have been able to regain, but questions always remain. For instance, do you have any way of knowing if Austin Bolivar Bishop served under the command of Sgt.
