Norma,
Perhaps a good place to start might be with the 1850 and 1860 census if you know any of the names of his family. As for him dieing on the way home, since he was wounded in Nov. of 63, it makes sense that he might have died when the record says he did. Many died of infection some time after they were wounded. THe census would give you the name of his wife and children and then if you look at the 1870 census you would find her but not him. Another route would be to see if you are able to find her name, check and see if she did not remarry if she applied for a widows pension. The link at the top of this page can help you with that. You can go to NARA direct but they don't do as good a job as Jim and ALan Pitts and their man in DC, Jon does based on my experience. NARA gave me about six pages of my ancestor and Jim's site gave me a 151 pages so as you can see, it was much more complete. I must tell you that most of them are not that long, maybe 30 to 70 pages but give it a try. Frank
