Alan, I was aware of Uncle Alex' capture at Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864. The Strasburg listing was on the Union POW records, part of his CMSR you kindly provided me. Strasburg is southeast of Cedar Creek, and south of Middleton. After Sheridan's counterattack, it would have been a location through which Early would have retreated. Wofford's Brigade—Col. Henry P. Sanders (Wofford was in Georgia at this time, I believe.) attached to Kershaw's Division, consisted of:
16th Georgia
18th Georgia *
24th Georgia
3d Georgia Battalion
Cobb's (Georgia) Legion
Phillip's (Georgia) Legion

From Early's after action report: "All the captured artillery had been carried across Cedar Creek, and a large number of captured wagons and ambulances, and we succeeded in crossing our own artillery over, and everything would have been saved if we could have rallied 500 men, but the panic was so great that nothing could be done. A small body of the enemy's cavalry dashed across Cedar Creek above the bridge, and got into the train and artillery .running back on the pike, and passed through our men to this side of Strasburg, tore up a bridge, and thus succeeded in capturing the greater part of the artillery and a number of ordnance and medical wagons and ambulances. The men scattered on the sides, and the rout was as thorough and disgraceful as ever happened to our army."

It appears the greatest contact of the retreating Confederate and pursuing Union troops was near Strasburg. The balance of Early's report is very self serving, blaming almost everyone except himself for the turn of fortune. Stan
