I found your post regarding the firing on the A.O. Tyler very interesting because Captain John Collier was my great-great grandfather. There is very little written about him in the family history that I have.

It does state that he entered the "gun-boat" service during the Civil War. I'm not sure what the gun-boat service was. Would that mean that he might have a Civil War pension record?

Other ships that he commanded were the "Anglo Saxon" and "The Mariner," according to the history.
