Innkeeper James Jackson (who bears an uncanny resemblance to Thomas Jonathan Jackson) shot gunned to death 24 year old Colonel Elmer Elsworth in the stairwell of the Marshall House Hotel, Alexandria, Virginia, 24 May 1861. Ellsworth was a rising star in the Union army and a personal friend of Lincoln. He had removed the Confederate Flag from the hotel. Jackson was also killed in the incident by Corporal Francis Brownell who was promoted to 2nd Lt. Ellsworth's funeral was held in the East Room of the White House, the following day.
