Re: 6 pounder
It was a 3-inch Ordnance Rifle that burst in Captain James Reilly's battery on 2 July. According to an article in the Salisbury Watchman (NC) of 3 August 1863, Reilly's, Latham's and Garden's batteries opened fire briskly for about 15-20 minutes in the late afternoon of 2 July, until the infantry (Hood's division) came on line with the batteries. With no opportunity to renew their fire, the guns were withdrawn except for one in Reilly's battery which had had an axle shot off. About an hour later, Reilly's battery took another position about 300-400 yards to the left, and it was in the latter spot that the Rifle burst, wounding one man slightly. Possibly the wounded man was Private Andrew M. Howard. The disabled Rifle was brought off the field before dark. I don't have any information on the history of the guns in Reilly's battery.
