Ron, I wish to appologize for my lapse of memory, It seems I was mistaken on the date that was referenced by John E. Magee's diary as to the time the gun was left behind. I was also mistaken that the type of gun was mentioned. There has been almost 11 months passed between now and when I last read the account.
"Monday, April 7th 1862
"Wet morning - got orders to move forward at sunup - we went about 1 mile and took a position near the centre, leaving one of our pieces behind - the rifled gun. A little after sunup a heavy fire commenced on our left, and fore long it was general all along the line. An order from Genl. Beauregard for our Battery to proceed immediately to our left, for the emeny were about to flank us. Before we had got far loud cheering from our boys told us that they had repulsed the enemy, and we returned to our position. About 9 o'clock cannonading commenced near us. We were ordered forward to open fire which we obeyed with alacrity. Our Battery fired for 20 minutes and then ceased..."
Again I appologize for the missinformation I gave you. I must remember that I don't have a memory, I have children.
May life smile upon you and yours. Merry Christmas.
Your obediant servant,
Glen Nalley
