Keith:
Thank you for your time and efforts in sending this informatiuon but there are discrepancies in this list and the number of guns. The list of batteries contains Bains'battery which is known to have remained in Corinth and never arrived on the field, so deduct 6 guns. Further, Polk's battery had been withdrawn from the battlefield after it was pounded in earlier fighting in the Rhea Field, deduct another 6 guns. Both Ketchum's and Hubbard's batteries were represented in Ruggles' Line by only a section of 2 guns for each, so deduct another 4 guns. Captain Melancton Smith's Mississippi battery was located on the eastern side of the battlefield below the Purdy road and not present in the line, deduct another 6 guns. The source you provide mentions 53 guns but the list on same page totals 71 guns. This is an example of the difficulty of researching civil war records. Regarding the records of the Battle of Shiloh, there are records and reports written before the battle that do not represent the actual condition of the army on the morning of April 6th. There were deductions from the "Official Records" that changed conditions. For example, some suggest the strength of the army as 45,000 but the actual strength at the battle was closer to 40,000 because of these deductions. I have read Ruggles Official Report and the Affidavits written a year after te battle and they prove to me that Ruggles may not have been aware of the efforts of Major Shoup in bringing up more guns.
Keith, if you have more info, please send it.
Ron
