Thanks Daniel. Yes, that is was my starting point. Col Johnston was in charge of the expedition and commander of the military escort, of course. I would like to find the actual field notes of the surveyors and astronomers which would provide very precise descriptions of their locations (lat and long). Since this was just a couple of years before the Civil War began, it gives clues as to the locations of roads and remote settlements when the war began.
