Perhaps, I can set to rest some of the confusion about the Brigades involved at Mine Creek. My great Grandfather was in the 6th Missouri State Militia Cavalry and was in Sanborns brigade. According to two diaries from that regiment, only Phillips Missouri Militia Brigade and the Independent Brigade led by the then Lt. Col. Frederick W. Benteen, of 10th Mo. Cavalry, were the only ones who broke the confederate line. McNeils Brigade which contained the 7th Ks and my Great Grandfathers brother and brother-in-laws regiment the 13th Mo. vet. Vol. regiment were behind Sanborn's brigade. They wrote that they had been resting and watering their horses when they heard artillery fire to the south of the crossing they were at just north of the present town of Mound City. When they arrived on the field the fighting was at an end lasting less than a half hour. Lieutenant Shinn was very descriptive as to the shape of the Battle Field. The OR's records are fairly accurate on the subject.
