Re: Captured Chaplains and Surgeons at Fort McHenr

Rev. T. D. Witherspoon, 42nd Mississippi, wrote an interesting article "Prison Life at Fort McHenry," Southern Historical Society Papers, vol. VIII, no. 2, February 1880, pp. 77-83.

Also, Rev. Peter Tinsley, 28th Virginia, apparently kept a diary between June - December, 1863. The Peter Tinsley papers are archived at Wheaton College, John and Joyce Schmale Civil War Collection. It appears that some of the entries were written at Johnson's Island; the archives notes of people mentioned in the diary also list these clergy names: Brooks, Carson, Murphy, Witherspoon, Pettigrew, Hardie. Were the group of chaplains from Ft. McHenry kept together and sent to Johnson's Island in August 1863?

I'm especially interested in more information about the Rev. Mr. Tinsley. Was he also captured after the battle of Sharpsburg in September 1862? Any information on this would be appreciated.

As noted by Mr. Chapla, Faith in the Fight by John Wesley Brinsfield (Stackpole, 2003) contains an excellent comprehensive roster of Confederate chaplains.
