Info on the Rev. John McGill, from The Macgill-McGill Family of Maryland, compiled by his son, John McGill, 1948 (pp. 71-73). Reprint available at www.higginsonbooks.com. Born 8-15-1840, Jefferson, MD. Died 12-27-1925, Washington DC. Married 5-25-1873 Virginia Beverley; 8 children. Studied at Virginia Theological Seminar (Episcopal), was in the class interrupted by the Civil War. He and his brother Samuel, who was studying medicine at UVA, joined the Confederate Army in 1862. Ordained Deacon 9-28-1862 by Bishop Johns in VA; served as Chaplain, 52nd VA. Was taken prisoner at Gettysburg and imprisoned at Johnson's Island, where he nearly died. When he was finally exchanged his health was so impaired that upon reporting to the Army for active duty he was refused and furloughed indefinitely. In search of health, he went to Middlesex Co., VA; was ordained Priest by Bishop Jons, 4-10-1866. he spent his entire ministerial life of more than 50 years in Virginia, serving throughout the state, and was beloved. On his tombstone, in the cemetery at Little Georgetown, Fauquier Co., VA is this humble inscription, his own request: "A sinner saved by Grace." There is a picture of Rev. McGill on page 71 of this book.
