Hello Bill, the simple answer to your question is yes, Camp Chase did keep records of most of the prisoners they held. Much of the information is on micro-film however the general prisoners are NOT in any particular order. Along with their names were such items as when and where they were captured and their height and color of hair and eyes. In addition some of the barracks records are also on micro-film detailing where the men sleep and what barracks they occupied. Camp Chase toward the middle of the War had three seperate prisons. Prison 1,2 and 3. In addition two seperate jails. One for Confederates and one for Yankees. The Provost Marshall at Camp Chase Lt. Sankey was in charge of both jails.

Insofar as the Confederats going home, it varried. Some were given train tickets, while others formed groups and headed toward home. A few of the prisoners stayed in Columbus for a short time and at least one was arrested for murder. Most of the Confederates were given rations and shoes should they decide to accept them. Some somewhat recently discovered photos of Camp Chase show some of the prisoners waiting their turn in line waiting to be released.

I am writing a book about Camp Chase and have NOT decided to list all of the prisoners at Camp Chase in the book. If NOT in the book it will probably be listed on a website after the book is published.
