The "Galvanized Yankee" regiments performed many duties in the West--from Minnesota to the Utah Territory--including: quelling Indian uprisings, protecting settlers, restoring stage and mail services, guarding survey parties for the Union Pacific Railroad, escorting supply trains, and rebuilding telegraph lines. They were all mustered out of service in November 1866.
